Back inApple thought it would be really cool to reduce cable clutter for displays, so the company conceived of a combination DVI, power and USB to come up with a 30 pin 3 x 10 connector called the Apple Display Connector. The end of the cable attached to the monitor looks like this:. Note: the connector is circular on both ends. In time, Apple decided, probably based on customer push back, that selling monitors that wouldn't fit PCs and had non-standard connectors wasn't a good idea.
Unfortunately as well, computer technology changes faster than excellent LCD Cinema displays wear out reduced brightnessand so many users who've migrated from older Power Mac G4s and G5s and want to use that ADC-based Cinema display will have to buy a new cable adapter. It is a monster power supply and adapter measuring almost 5 x 5 x 1. See the diagram below.
Make room, because it's quite a bit larger and warmer when powered than the MacBook power supplies you may be using. Several Apple customers have reported good success with this setup. Mac and iPhone Tips Podcasts Forums.I have a 27" Cinema Display that I would like to connect to my Windows-based laptop.
The Cinema Display works as expected when connected to both of my Mac Pro desktop computers but I no longer use those computers. When I connect the Cinema Display to the laptop, the monitor powers on the indicator in the lower right hand corner of the monitor lights up but there is no display. Additionally, the laptop recognizes that there is a secondary monitor and allows me to extend the display to that monitor.
From my initial research, I may need to inst all Boot Camp drivers to get the display to work but I wanted to reach out to the community before doing that. Is that the best way to go or is there something else I should do?
Does the laptop have a discrete video card? You may need to disable the internal display and use the external only. Thanks for these questions. My apologies but I was not clear and I left out some info. I have not tried any DisplayPort adapters at this point. The laptop has a Nvidia K series graphics card the laptop is at home so I can get the specific model later.
I would prefer to maintain the same extended display I had with another external monitor. Brand Representative for Tripp Lite. The DVI cable will plug in, but, no Digital signal present.
The first step is identifying what model of display you actually have. You most likely have either a 23" or 30" Apple Cinema Display. Does it look like the one below? Something like this one from Monoprice.

The Dell doesn't have a firewire port. Do I need it?
Any help appreciated. Go to Solution. Will fit in your system. No idea if it works for your display. You didn't say which one you have exactly or whether or. Either way I would say it won't work exactly the way it should because its apple and apple uses. I too am a user.
View solution in original post. OK, thanks. Will it work for my display? I don't know what ADC is. Purchased in From what I've read online from users, it "should work" - but I may need to buy some kind of kit for the slim form factor of the Dell. If your display detects the wrong adapter connected to it, it will flash its power light in a repeating short-long-short error code.
Check the table and picture below to learn which power adapter to use with the display. As you can see in the picture above, each power adapter has the power rating, in watts, printed on it. Accepted Solutions. You didn't say which one you have exactly or whether or not its ADC.This single processor Power Mac G5 was discontinued soon after in June On newer DVI-based displays lacking ADC, Apple still opted for a single " ganged cable " that connects the separate signal cables to each other so they cannot tangle.
As ofApple no longer uses a DVI-based interface for any of its displays. Power is supplied to the ADC port by an additional finger connector on the video card, which plugs into a slot on the motherboard between the AGP slot and the back panel of the computer; on G4 Macs, some power is also sent through AGP pins 3 and G5 Macs draw all power from the finger connector and therefore are 8x compatible.
To use an AGP 8x card in a G4, pins 3 and 11 must be somehow disabled; this can be done by placing tape over the conductive part of the pin, slicing the PCB traces, or on some cards, desoldering surface mount resistors. 661-3356 - Apple Cinema Display 30-inch Power Adapter, 150 W
Is anyone familiar with this material? I've got a dead power adapter that appears to have a trivial fault. The fuse is blown. But when I replace the fuse, everything is fine. Fuses do get tired sometimes. Now, I'm putting all the heatsinks back together so I can do a full load test.
But there's dark grey silicone to glue things together, and there's some white material that has a consistency half-way between silicone and hardened heat-sink compound. It's usually used in a 'glue' application, but there are two or three places where it might be acting as heat-sink compound.
The use of two different types has me confused. Is it just another glue or does it also act as heat-sink compound? I've attached a picture showing what I'm talking about. You can clearly see both the white and grey material.Connect Your old Apple Cinema Display to a new MacBook Pro 16" (2019)
A heatsink mounts over the board and part of the heatsink is glued to the yellow transformer with the white material. There's also another heatsink that goes over the first one.
The white material was used between them. Is anyone familiar with this stuff? Is it just glue or is it also heatsink compound? The following users thanked this post: Mourning Star. There are a variety of thermal adhesives. Some are two-part epoxy mixes, others are acrylic adhesives. Hi, I am also trying to repair A Just wondering where the fuse is and what did you use as the adhesive in the end.
Hi, I have not tried to open it yet. Just trying to gather as much info as possible first. I think there is no good way to open it.
Plan to use a Dremel to carefully cut around the seam until it was thin enough to crack apart. Mourning Star Contributor Posts: 5 Country:. I know this is an ancient topic, but I have an A that I'm trying to repair, also. But I do not see a fuse I've attached a picture of mine, in case anyone sees this old, dead thread and has some advice. I located F1 Now to test it. The fuse is the upright component that says T4A V next to it.

This is the direct link to the Bootcamp drivers for x Note, the display should be detected on all machines, however you may have issues with brigthness controls, or using the built in audio without using the Apple drivers. I use the WinACD drivers from sourceforge. Here are my experiences with using a Cinema HD on a non apple system. Not a full solution but it is something. For the 30" and the 27" you will need a dual-link DVI-D port to be able to use the full resolution.
I have had mine a 30" on several systems without problems. Without drivers, brightness controls on the screen, usb hub and firewire hub should all work. Can only confirm working of brightness and usb-hub myself as I have never had it connected to a PC with firewire.
Caveat with brightness is that you won't get the nice brightness setting overlay as this is done in software by OSX. If you want to have a brightness overlay, you will need a bootcamp CD and don't forget to connect the USB connector of your screen to your system as the brightness controls go over USB. This driver will give you a HID driver for the display which is only half of what you need.

You also need to install the bootcamp utility:. After installation and reboot you will get a bootcamp icon in your tray. When you change the brightness of the screen using the controls on the screen your system should now display an overlay. Unfortunatly I haven't succeeded yet in getting into the configuration of the bootcamp utility because it complaints about the startup disk. The existing guides on this page were a little aged doing this inso I looked elsewhere blog post from Installed BootCamp 5.Skip to main content of results for "apple cinema display".
